THE ARMY BOMB disposal teams dealt with four devices yesterday as part of an overall increase in activities by anti-terrorism gardaí ahead of the visit of Britain’s Prince Charles next week.
Yesterday gardaí also carried out a number of arrests over offences connected to terrorism.
A bomb disposal team made safe component parts of a explosive device making equipment in Dromiskin, County Louth.
Garda search
The parts were found during a garda search of a private residence in Dromiskin yesterday evening.
A controlled explosion took place after 10.20pm and items of evidence were handed over to the gardaí to assist them with their investigation.
The scene was declared safe at 3am.
Two viable devices were also made safe in the Mannorhamilton area of Leitrim yesterday afternoon.
Gardaí on traffic enforcement duties stopped a car at Glenfarne and on searching the vehicle, found a pistol and the suspected explosive components.
Two men in their 20s were arrestsed at the scene. A cordon and road closure on the N16 was put in place. There was no need for a controlled explosion in this case and the scene was declared safe at 8pm.
The army was also called in to deal with a suspect device found in Courtown, Wexford. The device was made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion.
Dissident republican activity
In total, 20 searches were conducted in Louth, Dublin and Wexford as part of an ongoing investigation into dissident republican activity.
Four men, one in his 60s and the other three in their 20s, were arrested for directing terrorism, membership of an unlawful organisation and possession of explosives. The men are still being held for questioning.
