Christmas trees

1. Prices for real Christmas trees are mostly staying the same this year despite cost inflation in the wider economy. 

With the price of everything going up, The Journal checked whether Christmas tree prices are following the direction of grocery bills and other household expenditure.

Zelenskyy’s visit

2. It was the story of the day yesterday: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed a joint sitting of the Oireachtas and attended a number of engagements across Dublin.

Fox hunting

3. A large majority of people are in favour of a ban on foxes being hunted for sport, a new opinion poll has suggested. 

According to the results, total of 72% said they believe foxhunting as a sport should be banned in Ireland, with 17% against the proposal. The other 11% of respondents said they weren’t sure.

Missing person appeal

4. Gardaí are asking the public for help to find a man who went missing a few weeks before last Christmas on the one-year anniversary of his disappearance.

Anthony Hanlon was last seen in Drogheda exactly one year ago on 3 December 2024. He attended an appointment in Drogheda on that day, but he has not been seen since.

5. Keir Starmer is to face MPs’ questions about the consequences of the Budget after a report warned of the impact of tax hikes on the British economy over the next two years.

The UK’s Prime Minister will appear in the House of Commons today for his weekly clash with Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, a week after Chancellor Rachel Reeves set out the Budget.

Russia

6. Vladimir Putin yesterday said Russia is “ready” for war if Europe seeks one, accusing the continent’s leaders of trying to sabotage a deal on the Ukraine conflict before he met with US envoys.

Speaking in Dublin, Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Putin’s comments were “nothing new”.

7. A trial of four gardaí and a retired Superintendent heard yesterday that hundreds of screenshots of WhatsApp messages between the accused former superintendent and others were captured by gardaí investigating alleged unlawful interference in potential or pending road traffic prosecutions.

Belfast City Hall

8. Two people were arrested yesterday after clashes outside Belfast City Hall following protests related to the flying of a Palestinian flag.

The flag was flown yesterday following a vote, which was supported by Sinn Féin members on the council who said it was to demonstrate solidarity with Palestine.

Fog of war

9. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth cited the “fog of war” in defending a follow-up strike on an alleged drug-carrying boat in the Caribbean Sea in early September.

Speaking during a cabinet meeting at the White House Hegseth said he did not see there were survivors in the water when the second strike was ordered and launched
