The 9 at 9 Hosepipe ban comes into effect, high temperatures forecast, and TD to go to gardaí with concerns over suicide forum.

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to know to start the day.

Suicide forum

1. A controversial suicide forum has been blocked by some Irish internet providers, but not by others.

The lack of a common approach towards the site comes as Sinn Féin mental health spokesperson Sorca Clarke queried whether the government had engaged with gardaí, the online regulator and internet providers about restricting access to the harmful forum.

Sam Neill

2. Jurassic Park star Sam Neill died from pneumonia, his long-time representative confirmed.

The Northern Ireland-born New Zealand actor, best known for playing Dr Alan Grant in the blockbuster franchise, died aged 78 in Sydney, Australia, on Monday.

Israeli bonds

3. It is “sort of bizarre” for Israel to have Ireland as the home state for its bonds in the EU, the Governor of the Central Bank said, noting they are not marketed in the country “at all”.

It’s not coming home

4. England’s dreams were dashed last night when they were beaten by Argentina 2-1, ending their World Cup journey.

The loss has left English media clutching at straws, trying to disparage their defeaters.

Myanmar

5. The United Nations warned that more than 500 people were feared dead following reports of two large shipwrecks off Myanmar since late June.

The UN’s International Organization for Migration and its refugee agency UNHCR voiced alarm in a joint statement at reports “that two boats carrying more than 500 people may have capsized off the coast of Myanmar in recent days”.

Staying on

6. Under-fire Thomas Tuchel retains the Football Association’s backing after England’s disappointing World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina and looks set to stay on as manager for Euro 2028.

Occupied Territories Bill

7. The Occupied Territories Bill has been passed, clearing its way to be signed into law.

Once the Bill is enacted and commenced, the importation of goods originating in Israeli settlements into Ireland will be made an offence. Attempts to include a ban on trade in services have repeatedly failed to be added to the legislation and it has now passed with the focus on goods.

Department of Justice

8. Several pieces of legislation have been approved which the government says will strengthen protections for women and children.

The new legislation to pass all stages in the Oireachtas includes Jennie’s Law, Valerie’s Law, the criminalisation of ‘sex for rent’, and legislation that will restrict disclosure of counselling notes in criminal trials to the maximum extent possible.

Scorcher

9. Temperatures of up to 30C are expected again today after Met Éireann issued a fresh high temperature warning for much of the country, with forecasters saying there is still no immediate end in sight to the prolonged hot spell.

A six-week hosepipe ban came into effect overnight across Dublin, south Tipperary and parts of Kildare, Meath, Wicklow and Wexford.
