Michael Gaine investigation

1. A man arrested in the investigation into the murder of Co Kerry man Michael Gaine was released last night without charge.

A man in his 50s was arrested on Sunday following the discovery of human remains at Michael Gaine’s farm in Kenmare. He was questioned for 24 hours before his release.

50-hour protest

2. 14-year-old Cara Darmody will be protesting with supporters for 50 hours outside Leinster House today to demand that the government reduce the number of children on waiting lists for assessments of need.

Roughly 15,000 children are on waiting lists for the assessment, which are required in cases where the child may have additional needs and give access to important state resources.

Injection centres

3. In this morning’s lead story, Mairead Maguire reports on a new study that has found that nearly 90% of people who died while homeless in 2021 had a history of substance abuse.

The Health Research Board has said a way to combat problem drug use is the introduction of injection centres and safe use facilities.

Swim Ireland

4. Former Swim Ireland national performance director Jon Rudd has been accused of “bullying, a toxic training environment and controlling food culture” by 12 swimmers during a previous role he held in England.

The allegations against Rudd were detailed in a BBC Panorama programme on Monday night.

Coercive control

5. Sentences for people convicted of coercive control must reflect the seriousness of the crime, the National Women’s Council of Ireland has said.

The remarks come after a man was given a wholly suspended sentence after pleading guilty to a campaign of abuse and coercive control against in wife in Dublin between 2019 and 2022.

RTÉ’s finances

6. The account books for RTÉ and how the Comptroller and Auditor General will soon become the overseer of them is in the headlines again this morning.

At Cabinet this morning, Media Minister Patrick O’Donovan will outline to ministers that, in the government’s view, a Sinn Féin bill for public scrutiny of the broadcaster’s accounts does not go as far as the government’s plan.

44 people killed in Gaza overnight

7. Gaza’s civil defence agency has said 44 people have died overnight by Israeli strikes.

It comes as the Israeli military has stepped up its offensive in the region. Eight people were killed in a strike on a school sheltering displaced people in Gaza City and 12 people in a strike on a house in Deir el-Balah in central Gaza.

Another 15 were killed in a strike on a gas station near the Nuseirat refugee camp and nine in a strike on a house in the Jabalia refugee camp.

Digital census

8. The digitalisation of the 1926 Census – the first Census in the Irish Free State – to go live on 18 April 2026, ministers will be told this morning.

It will enable people to search and view the individual returns of the 1926 Census free of charge, making available for the first time the personal information related to the almost 3m people living in Ireland on the night of 18 April 1926.

Fire in Galway

9. A man has been hospitalised following a fire at an industrial estate in Galway city last night.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the fire at the Royal Court Business Centre in Liosban Industrial Estate at around 8.30pm. A man was taken to University Hospital Galway with non-life-threatening injuries.
