1. With children off school for the summer, parents broke down the eye-watering sums needed for the summer, with some families deciding to take unpaid leave during the break due to a lack of options.
“We are cobbling it together as we go,” one parent told The Journal.
2. Gardaí shot a man with a “less lethal” round in Dundalk, Co Louth, on Monday night after he failed to drop a knife he was wielding, a garda spokesperson said.
Gardaí said the man received medical treatment and that he is now detained at Dundalk garda station.
3. Fire crews have returned to battle a mountain blaze in County Tipperary this morning.
Tipperary Fire and Rescue Service had made the decision to stand down active firefighting operations at the Slievenamon outside Clonmel in Co Tipperary overnight for crew safety.
4. A 28-year-old man is set to appear in court in the UK this morning charged with the murder of former minister Ann Widdecombe.
Joshua Kerry, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court charged with the murder of the Reform UK spokeswoman.
5. In a surprise move on Monday, the UK’s Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Hilary Benn announced he would be leaving his role after two years during a Cabinet reshuffle under new prime minister Andy Burnham.
He has been replaced by MP Chris Bryant.
6. The Israeli military is quietly but quickly building a giant earth barrier separating more than 50% of the Gaza Strip it controls from the rest of the territory, according to satellite imagery, further entrenching the division of the Palestinian enclave.
7. A convicted rapist is to be sentenced later for raping another woman a year after he was released from prison.
The victim was herself arrested while trying to report the incident at a Dublin garda station in a distressed state.
8. Iran targeted US radar and air defence installations in the Persian Gulf, warning Washington of “more decisive and powerful” attacks to come as the conflict threatened to widen with a blockade of Saudi ports by Houthi rebels in Yemen.
9. A group of seven Irish politicians will travel to Germany this week to attend the trial of an Irish man and four other pro-Palestinian activists charged with causing about €1 million worth of damage at the factory of an Israeli-owned defence company.
People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett and Sinn Féin TD Mairéad Farrell will today meet 32-year-old Dubliner Daniel Tatlow-Devally in prison ahead of the next session of his trial on Wednesday.
