1. #BUDGET: Ministers have signed off on the final details of the Budget, following a Cabinet meeting last evening. It’s reported in the Irish Independent this morning that the measures will include free GP care for under-fives as well as changes in social welfare payments for young unemployed people.
2. #KALIE: An Irish girl has been killed in a car crash in New York state. Kalie Gill, who was 15, had moved to the US with her family from Leitrim earlier this year, IrishCentral.com is reporting. Her sister Lindsey, 12, was seriously injured.
3. #BAILOUT: Ireland’s progress towards exiting the bailout at the end of the year will be under discussion at a meeting of eurozone finance ministers today in Luxembourg. The 17 ministers from the currency area meet today, followed by talks tomorrow with their 11 non-euro colleagues. Junior minister Brian Hayes is representing Ireland.
4. #PERU: Michaella McCollum Connolly, the Irish woman who tried to smuggle drugs out of Peru along with co-accused Melissa Reid, from Glasgow, is to be moved to a different prison — one notorious for overcrowding and disease, according to Sky News. The pair could be sharing their cell at the Santa Monica women’s prison with up to 38 other inmates.
5. #MADDIE: Detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have released two e-fit images of a man they wish to speak to. It’s ahead of a new appeal on the BBC’s Crimewatch programme tonight. The lead investigator said officers will be visiting Ireland as part of the appeal.
6. #EXTRADITION: A 29-year-old man wanted in connection with a gangland-style murder in Dublin has appeared in court in Belfast after an extradition warrant was issued — according to the BBC. Gary Flynn is wanted over the shooting of Seamus O’Byrne in Tallaght in 2009.
7. #TEMPLE: The death toll from a stampede at a temple in India has reached 115. It’s believed the panic was sparked by rumours a bridge was about to collapse. Authorities have come came under fire over policing levels, amid claims the situation was aggravated by baton-charging.
8. #DRUGS: A rise in addictions to a drug cocktail of alcohol, cocaine and benzodiazepine was recorded during 2012, according to the annual report from the Coolmine Therapeutic Community treatment centre. A decline in the use of heroin in the Dublin area was also recorded, RTÉ is reporting.
9. #DARTS: There’s reduced capacity on DART services in Dublin this morning, Irish Rail is advising. It’s due to driver issues. Certain trains are operating with just two carriages, instead of six or eight. Some passengers have reported not being able to get on their trains as a result.
