Army carry out controlled explosion on War of Independence-style hand grenade
The device was discovered in Aughrim, Co Galway yesterday afternoon.
AN ARMY BOMB disposal team has rendered safe a historic hand grenade that could date back as far as the War of Independence.
This happened yesterday afternoon in Aughrim, Co Galway.
The device was discovered by a member of the public who was walking along a footpath close to the area.
Upon finding it, An Garda Síochána were called, and they subsequently contacted the Defence Forces.
The Army Bomb Disposal Team arrived at the scene at 4.50pm.
A controlled explosion was then carried out on the device and the scene was declared safe at 5.30pm.
The hand grenade, a corroded Mills 36, could potentially date back almost 100 years.
The Mills type grenade was used during both world wars, the Irish Civil War and the War of Independence.
Anyone discovering a similar device is advised to contact An Garda Síochána and to keep a safe distance away.
