Emergency services attending scrap metal fire in Belfast's Titanic Quarter

Smoke can be seen rising over the east of the city this afternoon.

EMERGENCY SERVICES ARE attending a major fire in Belfast this afternoon.

Plumes of smoke have been seen rising from the city’s Titanic Quarter, the waterfront redevelopment of its old shipbuilding industry, throughout this afternoon.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service posted on social media that its crews were attempting to extinguish a fire in a large quantity of scrap metal at East Twin Road in the east of the city.

The fire service added:

“Operations will continue for some time. Members of the public are encouraged to stay away from the area and keep windows and doors closed.”

A PSNI statement has advised that motorists and other road users should avoid the East Twin Road area “due to an ongoing fire” in the area.

“Please seek an alternative route for your journey,” the PSNI said in the statement.
