Backpacker death: Man in Melbourne court charged with murder

Luke James Wentholt, 31, is charged with the murder of David Greene at a boarding house in St Kilda East.

A MAN has appeared in court in Australia charged with the murder of a Dubliner who died after being attacked with a hammer in a boarding house outside Melbourne.

Luke James Wentholt, aged 31, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court via videolink.

He remains in remand since an original court appearance in connection with the attack at a boarding house in St Kilda East on August 26.

That attack left Cabinteely man David Greene fighting for his life, and his childhood friend David Byas seriously injured. Green died in Melbourne’s Alfred hospital last Friday.

The Age said his appearance in court was to face upgraded charges after Greene’s death, and added that Wentholt cried during his appearance.

He will remain in custody until December 18.
