• The Sunday Tribune masthead was used by the Irish Daily Mail as a ‘marketing stunt’, the paper’s managing director told the District Court in Dublin today. The masthead was used following the announcement that the Sunday Tribune had gone into receivership.
• RTÉ has defended the timing of the publication of a press release on the salaries paid to its top presenters. It said it was not timed so as to minimise media coverage.
• The Oireachtas members were limbering up their vocal chords at the weekend while recording a version of Bridge Over Troubled Water, which will raise money for Pieta House, a suicide prevention charity. They hope to reach No 1 with the single at Christmas.
• The Irish National Organisation for the Unemployed has welcomed the government’s commitment not to cut social welfare rates in next month’s Budget. INOU’s head of policy and media told TheJournal.ie that many people “are struggling to survive”.
• Cigarette sales have dropped dramatically in Ireland during the recession - they fell by 10 per cent in 2010 alone.
• A bill enforcing gender quotas will be published with a year, says Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore – but Labour’s Joanna Tuffy has described election quotas as “anti-democratic” and “discriminatory”.
• Seán Quinn’s insolvency proceedings are being challenged by the IBRC – formerly Anglo - which claims courts do not have jurisdiction over the businessman.
• A warning has been issued to Irish consumers over Lloyd Grossman korma sauce, after two cases of botulism in England allegedly suffered by people who ate the sauce.
• Germany has expanded its investigation into a murderous neo-Nazi group which alleged it has killed a policewoman and nine immigrants.
• In need of a new pad? Why not rent director Jim Sheridan’s house – it costs €7,000 a month, but it does come with its own tidal swiming pool… and a private cinema.
• NAMA is considering proposals to turn the unfinished Anglo headquarters on Dublin’s North Wall Quay into a… ‘vertical park’. The Trees on the Quays plan would be self-generating and cost-effective, the architect behind the idea tells TheJournal.ie.
• Body scanner tests are on their way to Dublin Airport – but they have been delayed until 2012.
