€6 million investment for Irish Rail improvements

The companywill receive €600,000 for heaters and €1 million to improve journey times between Portarlington and Dublin.

AN INJECTION OF €6 million will be put into Irish Rail to help fund line speed improvements and the rollout of wifi on board its trains.

Public Transport Minister Alan Kelly made the announcement today, saying the capital was coming from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.

He added that the works will be completed by the end of this year.

The money will also be used to introduce fuel-saving technology to help the company reduce costs.

Stated Minister Kelly:

It is vital that our limited funds are spent well and give value to the exchequer. If we want to offer people a proper level of public transport this will require investment. This funding will greatly enhance both the customer service Irish Rail offers as well as equipping them with the ability to reduce costs in the future. It’s a win-win.

Commuters travelling between Portarlington and Dublin will be delighted to hear that €1 million will be spent on improving journey times between the two areas.

A further €1 million will be spent on ticket validations and €300k for the roll-out of wifi on 63 rail cars.

With the winter fast approaching, Irish Rail will receive €600,000 to be spent on heaters for depots.

Concluded Minister Kelly:

It is vitally important that public transport remains a strong option for those who commute. This Government is committed to improving the public transport system and the consumer experience. It is vital that every penny is stretched to the maximum benefit of the users of public transport.
