Fire services battle major blaze at industrial estate in Waterford city

The fire broke out at around 6.30pm yesterday.

EMERGENCY SERVICES REMAINED at the site of a significant fire in an industrial estate in the Tycor area of Waterford city overnight. 

Fire brigades from Waterford City Fire Service, Tramore, Dunmore East, Portlaw and Dungarvan were drafted to tackle the blaze, which broke out at a commercial premises at the old Jute Factory on Tycor Avenue at around 6.30pm yesterday. 

There have been no reports of any injuries. 

Significant flames could be seen above Walsh Park for the latter half of the Waterford v Cork game in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship. 

Emergency services remained at the site throughout the night to bring the fire under control. 

It’s understood that people living in nearby homes were evacuated.

Waterford City and County Council advised members of the public to avoid the area, and for residents to stay indoors.

“If you smell smoke in your immediate vicinity, please keep windows and doors shut,” the council said.
