GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you five things you should know before you head out the door.

1. #LEADER’S QUESTIONS The former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern was a guest on Pat Kenny’s Newstalk programme this morning. However, questions on actual political matters were conspicuous only in their absence as Ahern was only there to discuss Sunday’s All Ireland football final.

2. #FIRE TRAGEDY The Dublin-based brain surgeon whose family was killed in an arson attack in Leicester has spoken about how he is getting through his grief. Muhammad Taufiq Al Sattar told RTÉ’s Seán O’Rourke that he had spoken to his family just hours before the blaze.

3. #CHILDHOOD OBESITY The level of overweight children in Ireland is “frightening”, the Minister for children has said. Frances Fitzgerald told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that the publication of the Growing Up In Ireland report showed that 25 per cent of three-year-olds were overweight.

4. #TEACHER’S STRIKE Secondary school teachers are set to take industrial action after members of the ASTI voted in favour of rejecting the Haddington Road Agreement and taking industrial action. Teachers representatives called the agreement “a step too far”.

5. #LET’S GET IT ON Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has accepted RTÉ’s invite to a live debate on the issue of Seanad abolition. However, it is still unknown whether the Taoiseach will be at the podium on October 1.
