Police Ombudsman investigating incident that caused 'serious harm' to man on O'Connell Street

The incident occurred on O’Connell Street in the early hours of Friday morning, 15 August.

AN INCIDENT THAT involved the “serious harm” of a 51-year-old man is being investigated by Fiosrú, the Police Ombudsman.

The incident occurred on O’Connell Street in the early hours of Friday morning, 15 August. Fiosrú are independently investigating the incident and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

The Ombudsman would like to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity of the Holiday Inn, O’Connell Street, at approximately 4:15am on Friday, or any passing vehicles, including taxis, that might have dash cam footage or footage from a mobile phone.

The referral of the incident to Fiosrú was made by An Garda Síochána.

One of Fiosrú’s on call team of investigators attended the scene.

Section 203(1) of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024 provides for the referral to Fiosrú any matter that appears to the Garda Commissioner “to indicate the act or omission of a member of garda personnel” may have resulted in either the death of or serious harm to a person.

Anyone with information which may be of assistance to this independent investigation is asked to contact Fiosrú at 0818 600 800 or info@fiosrú.ie
