Thousands of flights cancelled as ice, snow and strong winds spread over 2,000 miles of North America.

A HUGE WINTER STORM has spread across the centre of the US, disrupting thousands of flights and forcing the closure of business and schools as it pushes eastwards into New York.

The icy storm stretching some 2,000 miles from New Mexico to Maine is the worst to affect the country for decades.

The snow shut down Dallas, Oklahoma city and Tulsa, according to the AP, and Chicago closed schools and government offices because of dangerous travelling conditions.

Already the snow and heavy winds have caused damage to baseball’s Wrigley Field in Chicago and to properties around the city, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Parts of Iowa, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin are still under a National Weather Service blizzard warning. Total snowfall in the eastern states is expected to reach up to two feet before the storm moves towards Nova Scotia on Thursday.

Anyone due to travel to the US in the coming days should check the status of their flight with their airline.
