Seeing things in a different light: 15 stunning photos of St Mary's Lighthouse

Stunning work.

EIGHTEEN MONTHS AGO, Press Association photographer Owen Humphreys decided to start using the lighthouse near his home as inspiration for a new project.

St Mary’s Lighthouse on St Mary’s Island in Whitley Bay, Tyne & Wear can often be seen in different “moods”, he says.

He has been capturing those moods, or changing weather patterns, over the year and a half.

The Lighthouse

Completed in 1898 on a hazardous coast for shipping, the lighthouse remained operational until 1984 when it was superseded by modern navigational techniques.

Up Close and Personal

Since 1984, the lighthouse and former keepers’ cottages have been operated as a visitor centre by North Tyneside Council. The surrounding Nature Reserve contains an area of rockpools, clifftop grassland, a beach and newly created wetland habitats and attracts thousands of visitors each year.
