Man arrested in Co Down after being spotted with suspected firearm on church grounds

The man had been seen on the church grounds with an angle grinder, causing damage to a fixture.

A MAN HAS been arrested in Co Down after he was spotted by a church group with a suspected firearm on church grounds.

At around 9.20pm last night, PSNI officers in Bangor received a report that a man had been seen in the grounds of Bangor Abbey with an angle grinder, causing damage to a fixture.

The man was then approached by members of a church group, who saw what they believed to be a firearm in his pocket.

They contacted police and officers were immediately dispatched to the scene, alongside Armed Response colleagues.

A 36-year-old man was located at a nearby address and arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm in suspicious circumstances and criminal damage.

He remains in custody at this time.

The PSNI has appealed to anyone who may have noticed suspicious activity in the area to make contact.
