When will the hot spell end? Met Éireann says 'unsettled conditions' will return before August

There could be “higher-than-average” rainfall from 10 August, according to Met Éireann’s extended range forecast.

RAIN MIGHT BE on the way back to Ireland after weeks of hot weather resulted in high temperature alerts and a hosepipe ban – but it’s not for a while yet.

In its extended range forecast, Met Éireann said that the week beginning 27 July will see more rain than usual and a shift to “more unsettled conditions”, while the week beginning 10 August might have “higher-than-average rainfall”.

However, temperatures are still expected to remain above average for the next month.

The national forecaster said that the extended range forecast can provide an insight into weather patterns; they are not as reliable as usual weather outlooks as forecasts beyond one week become “increasingly uncertain due to the chaotic nature of the atmosphere”.

Forecast

From 20 to 26 July, the weather is expected to remain mostly dry and settled with above-average temperatures and lower-than-average rainfall.

This is because high pressure, which has been dominating the weather pattern recently, will continue.

The following week, 27 July to 2 August, is less clear, but Met Éireann said precipitation amounts will be “slightly above normal” and a shift to more unsettled conditions is likely. Temperatures are expected to remain above average.

The 3 to 9 August is also unclear; however, the forecaster said warmer temperatures are likely to continue and more settled conditions are expected.

The rain looks like it will properly arrive from 10 August, but Met Éireann said the forecast is the least clear of all the weeks due to how far away it is.

It looks like temperatures will remain above average, but there will be higher-than-average rainfall that could be caused by scattered outbreaks of rain or showers developing.

The seasonal outlook from the forecaster suggests that the average temperature for July, August and September 2026 will, overall, be above average, while rainfall will likely be below average.

It looks like it will be up to one degree above normal temperature, with September to be the month most likely to have higher than normal temperatures.

Sea surface temperatures around Irish coasts are also expected to continue slightly above average, with temperatures expected to climb up to one degree warmer, particularly off southern and eastern coasts.
