Ministers recommend that Serbia become 'official candidate' to join EU

Well, that’s good timing…

A MEETING OF the EU’s various European Affairs ministers has recommended that Serbia be named an ‘official candidate’ to join the union.

The general affairs council, meeting in Brussels today, backed plans to include Serbia among a group that already includes Iceland, Macedonia, Montenegro and Turkey.

A formal decision on declaring Serbia an “official candidate” will be made at the summit of EU leaders this Thursday and Friday in Brussels.

The 27-member bloc will welcome its 28th full member when Croatia joins in July 2013.
