• A number of fuel trucks left the Whitegate oil refinery in Co Cork after gardaí succeeded in breaking the four-day blockade.
• Around 600 forecourts were without fuel, with more expected to follow, as blockades at fuel terminals around the country have disrupted supply.
• Talks between the government and transport and farming organisations have finished for the day, with sources saying a finalised fuel support package is “close”.
• A man climbed onto the wing of a US military plane at Shannon Airport this morning and attacked the fuselage and wing with a hatchet. 
• Fuel price protesters continued a blockade down the road from Rosslare Europort and shipments are unable to get through.

I AM MAXIMUS became the first horse since Red Rum 49 years ago to regain his Grand National crown after he won a thrilling race at Aintree.

Willie Mullins is the first trainer to win three successive Nationals since his fellow Irishman Vincent O’Brien (1953-55) in what was also a record-equalling fourth triumph in the race for the 69-year-old.

It was also a record fourth success for owner JP McManus.
