GARDAÍ SAY THEY attended a scene of criminal damage by fire that occurred at a premises on Holborn Street, Sligo, yesterday evening at approximately 11pm.

It’s believed a petrol bomb was thrown into Thomas Connolly’s heritage pub in Sligo town and that there were customers inside the premises when the blaze broke out.

Gardaí say that no injuries were reported.

A man aged in his 70s has been arrested in connection with this incident and gardaí say he is being detained at a station in the Garda North Western Region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

He can be held for a maximum of 24 hours.

Gardaí say that investigations are ongoing at this time.

Local councillor Gino O’Boyle who lives in the vicinity, said “it’s a horrible thing to see and I’m glad to hear there are no injuries”. 

He continued, “hopefully none of the local community are affected. I’d like to thank the Guards and emergency services for their swift response.”
