Sales of electric cars double in April amid soaring petrol and diesel prices

THE AMOUNT OF fully electric car sales more than doubled in April amid the soaring cost of petrol and diesel caused by the US-Israel war on Iran.

It meant that there were more fully electric cars than petrol or diesel models sold.

The changes in the habits of Irish motorists were recently captured in data from Done Deal, as the trade platform found that searches for electric vehicles had more than doubled since the Iran war.

Now, in the latest data from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, it has found that April saw 2,779 new electric cars registered.

This was an incredible 110% higher than the 1,335 registrations in April 2025.

So far this year, 16,779 new electric cars have been registered, representing a 48.5% increase compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the sale of fuel-intensive heavy goods vehicles (HGV) dropped by 20.5% in comparison to April last year. Year to date, they are down 9.5%.

Overall, the new car market share saw petrol-electric cars lead at 27% as the most popular engine type, followed by fully electric at 22, petrol 21%, plug-in petrol-electric at 14%. Diesel was last on 12%.
