The Taoiseach’s nominees to the upper house will be announced today.
TODAY IS THE day we’ll finally have a full Oireachtas as Enda Kenny is set to announce his 11 nominees to the Seanad.
The Taoiseach is expected to name some Fine Gael TDs who lost their seats in February’s general election, such as former minister James Reilly, as senators.
In recent years there has been much talk about reform of the upper house, with the public rejecting a referendum to abolish it (by 51.7% to 48.3%) in 2013.
People who campaigned for the Seanad to be reformed, such as by opening up the election process to all third-level graduates, have been frustrated at the lack of action in this regard.
