Explosions over Tel Aviv as Iran launches ballistic missiles towards Israel

The missiles were launched in response to earlier Israeli strikes on Iran.

LAST UPDATE | 13 Jun

IRAN HAS LAUNCHED a barrage of approximately 100 missiles towards Israel.

Explosions were spotted over the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, as the public was warned by Israel’s Home Front Command to seek out the nearest bomb shelter to them.

Israel’s national ambulance service, Magen David Adom, said that five people have been injured in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, and are being taken to hospital.

The Iranian missile strikes are in response to several Israeli attacks on Iranian sites this morning, which Iranian sources claim killed 78 people.

Israel’s firefighting service said this evening its teams were responding to several “major” incidents resulting from an Iranian missile attack, including efforts to rescue people trapped in a high-rise building.

“Firefighters are working in a high-rise building to rescue trapped individuals and extinguish a fire, as well as responding to two additional destruction sites,” a statement said.

Rescue efforts from across Israel have responded to assist in the response. Footage on Israeli television networks showed what appeared to be a building hit by a missile.

Huge plumes of smoke can be seen rising around skyscrapers in Tel Aviv. Rescuers have said that at least 34 people have been injured, including one person in critical condition.

Speaking during a United Nations General Assembly meeting – which was meant to be discussing the conflict in Gaza this evening – Director General of the global nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi called for restraint.

“I call on all bodies to exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation,” he told member states representatives in New York.

Footage also shows the Israeli ‘Iron Dome’ missile defence system intercepting several missiles above the city. Bright lights were also spotted over Jerusalem, where the missiles appear to have been intercepted.

The AFP News Agency and multiple American media outlets have reported that the US assisted Israel in intercepting missiles from Iran this evening. Israel is seeking to dismantle Tehran’s nuclear capabilities.

The US distanced itself from Israel’s initial attack on Tehran this morning, but warned attacks from the country would continue if Iran did not agree to a new nuclear deal.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirmed this evening that they had launched an attack on a number of targets in Israel.

“The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps… has executed its decisive and precise response against tens of targets, military centres and airbases of the usurping Zionist regime in the occupied territories,” the Guards said in a statement carried by state media.

The announcement of the missile attacks on state TV came shortly after a televised speech by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in which he promised that “the Islamic Republic will prevail over the Zionist regime”.

In a statement this evening, Iran’s military, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the missile attacks were “in response to the aggression and criminal assault carried out this morning by the savage, terrorist, and child-killing Zionist regime”.

They added that Israel’s earlier attacks on Iran had killed “several senior military commanders, prominent scientists, and innocent civilians, especially defenseless children”.

“The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as the defensive and offensive arm of the Iranian nation, has launched a forceful and precise retaliation,” a statement said.

In a video shared to social media shortly after the attacks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Iranians to unite against what he described as an “evil and oppressive regime”.

He said that Israel was engaged in “one of the greatest military operations in history”.

“Iran doesn’t know what hit them, they don’t know what will hit them. It has never been weaker,” Netanyahu said.

US President Donald Trump agreed on a call with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer that “dialogue and diplomacy” were needed to calm the crisis, Starmer’s office said.

Trump also spoke with Netanyahu Friday, US officials said, without elaborating.

Speaking during the UN General Assembly meeting this evening, Iranian representative Amir-Saeid Iravani described Israel’s attack as an “act of aggression” which threatens to pull the region into a wider conflict.

“This is not an attack on one country,” he told representatives. “It’s a direct attack on the international world order.”

Speaking at the same meeting, Israel’s representative Danny Danon criticised Iran’s nuclear programme and alleged that the country does not want to cooperate with global deals.

He reasoned that his country was targeting Tehran’s nuclear capabilities to prevent the production of dangerous weaponry and repeated many of the claims from the Israeli Prime Minister.
