• The controversy over independent TD Mick Wallace’s under declaration of VAT rumbles on with the Dáil Ceann Comhairle Seán Barrett today asking the committee on members’ interest to consider investigating the Wexford deputy’s tax affairs. There has been plenty more reaction to Wallace’s tax problems which emerged yesterday and we’ve been asking if he should resign as a TD.
• Two elderly men are in hospital tonight being treated for injuries sustained during an aggravated burglary in Tuam, Co Galway yesterday. Gardaí are investigating.
• The Michaela McAreavey murder trial has heard that fingerprints were not taken from the purse which one of the two accused was allegedly trying to steal from on the day the Tyrone woman was murdered. After two weeks, the trial is now set to last at least another fortnight.
• The State Examinations Commission has been forced to issue new Leaving Cert Irish papers for students sitting the exam next week after one of the CDs for the aural exam was accidentally played to some Junior Cert students sitting their Irish exam today.
• The Health Minister has received a report into the possible locations for the National Children’s Hospital. James Reilly said he would consider the report before bringing it to the Cabinet.
• In Syria, UN observers have reached the town where an alleged massacre was carried out earlier this week amid more violence and shelling in the region today.

• The eurozone crisis rumbles on with reports today that Spain could be on the verge of asking for a bailout although such claims were played down by government-type figures. We’ve heard that before…
• Meanwhile in an entirely unrelated piece, here’s 20 countries with the highest probability of defaulting.
• The Leveson inquiry into media ethics will have a bumper line up of former British Prime Ministers next week with no less than three including the current incumbent set to give evidence.
• A team of scientists who raised doubts about the theory that nothing is faster than the speed of light last year have now acknowledged that in fact Albert Einstein was right all along.
• Some householders in Limerick are being advised to boil their water after heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours raised fears that water supply may be contaminated.
• Want to see a piglet coming down the stairs and jumping into a bowl of oatmeal? Yeah you do.
• One Irish soccer fan is a very lucky man this evening after the pre-tournament nightmare of misplacing his match tickets was resolved when his friend picked them up at Dublin Airport and promised to deliver them out in Poland. Here’s the full story.
