The Daily Fix: Thursday

On the day the Mahon Tribunal findings were finally released, the Fix includes all the news from that report, as well as the rest of what Thursday had to offer.

EVERY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you a round-up of all the day’s main news, as well as the bits and pieces that you may have missed along the way.

All things #Mahon…

  • In case you are not aware yet, the Mahon Tribunal – the 15-year-long investigation into planning corruption and payments to politicians which brought about the demise of former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern – published its findings today.
  • Hugh O’Connell kept us entertained and brought all the day’s revelations in our Liveblog. Relive it here.
  • The report stopped short of making any findings of corruption against Ahern but said he failed to truthfully account for more than £165,000. Fianna Fáil officers are to meet this evening to discuss the status of his party membership in the wake of the findings.
  • Judge Alan Mahon had strong words on the damage corruption does to society. To combat its effect on public representation, he made a number of final recommendations.
  • The Government didn’t say much about the report today, as it will be considered and discussed in the Dáil next week, but it did confirm that the 3,270 page document will be sent to the Garda Commissioner, Office of the DPP and the Revenue Commissioner.
  • Here’s what else the tribunal had to say about the Quarryvale development, problematic witness Frank Dunlop, the “hopelessly compromised” Liam Lawlor and former minister Pádraig Flynn.
  • Previously private documents also revealed that Ahern dismissed plans for a National Stadium, just five years before announcing the ‘Bertie Bowl’.
  • Not only did the proceedings take 15 years, the FBI was called in.
  • And what was the Taoiseach doing during all this furore? Actually something much more important and worthwhile – reminding us it is the Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day on Friday.
  • Twitter was awash with #Mahon tidbits all day, and the report obviously got the Hollywood treatment with a #MahonMovies hashtag. Can you come up with anything better than PS…I Robbed You or  Pee Wee Flynn’s Big Adventure?

And in other news today…

  • The removal mass of Garda Sergeant Feargal McHugh took place this evening as Justice Minister Alan Shatter expressed his sympathies from Australia. The 49-year-old Wicklow man died in a car crash as he came off duty on Monday morning.
  • The European Central Bank is yet to make a decision on Ireland’s suggestion to change the terms of the imminent €3.06 billion promissory note payment so it could be settled with a long-term Irish Government bond.
  • What is that noise? It’s the question on everyone’s lips. Well, maybe not everyone, but certainly on Michael Healy-Rae’s.
  • The man suspected of killing seven people in France over the past two weeks was shot dead by police in Toulouse earlier today. Authorities entered Mohamed Merah’s apartment after a 32-hour standoff.
  • Is it an election year in the US?

  • The Gigs Place – yes, the late night diner with the mammoth Irish breakfasts in Dublin – has been put up for rent.
  • The much-hyped The Hunger Games comes to Irish screens tomorrow, as does Act of Valour and Wild Bill. Catch a sneak peek at the cinematic offerings in our Three-Trailer Thursday.
  • Ryan Gosling or a puppy? Which would you choose? (Just some light entertainment after a hard news day).
  • And finally, and for no reason whatsoever, here’s scenes from Planet of the Apes set to dance music. You are welcome.
