THINGS WE LEARNED:

#ARREST: A 47-year-old man has been arrested by detectives investigating an alleged incident of false imprisonment of a young woman in Dublin last Sunday. The suspect is known to gardaí and was also wanted on separate charges, having already served time in prison for kidnap and sexual assault.

#CHILDREN: The Association of Childhood Professionals has said it is concerned about the current public focus surrounding an RTÉ investigation going undercover in three creches across Dublin and Wicklow. The association said it would wait to view the programme on Monday before making specific comment on it, but has called on the government to work with its members to achieve quality in the childcare sector.

#BELFAST: A viable pipe bomb partially exploded on a residential street in Belfast yesterday evening. “It is only by good fortune that members of the public were not killed or seriously injured last night,” Chief Inspector Mark McEwan said in a statement. A motive for the plantation of the device has not yet been established.

#HIJACK: A woman aged in her 70s is recovering in hospital after sustaining injuries during an attempted hijacking in Belfast earlier today. Two men approached the elderly woman as she was getting into her car and threw her to the ground. They then tried to steal her vehicle but she started fighting them; as she struggled with the men, she was bitten on her thumb.

#SWEDEN: Parents and volunteers have been patrolling the streets of Stockholm’s immigrant-heavy suburbs to help quell riots that have raged for almost a week, serving as a successful deterrent to troublemakers and winning praise from police. Sweden has since the 1980s had a network of volunteers called “Nightwalkers”, usually made up of parents who walk the streets of their own suburbs in groups on weekend nights, talking to youngsters and simply making their presence known.

#UKRAINE: Around one hundred gay rights activists marched in Ukraine today, despite fears of violence and a court ban, marking the first gay pride event in the ex-Soviet country. “This can be considered a historic day,” said Elena Semyonova, a representative of the organisers.
