THINGS WE LEARNED:

#CHILDREN: The Chief-Designate of the Child and Family Agency has apologised for not making creche inspection reports publicly available during his time as National Director of Children and Family Services in the HSE. It is understood that all past inspections will be put online within weeks.

#LEE RIGBY: Police in London have charged a second man with the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby. Michael Adebolajo, 28, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court tomorrow in relation to the killing of the 25-year-old solider;  he also faces charges of attempted murder of two police officers and possession of a firearm with intent.

#BELFAST: A 62-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the attempted murder of two PSNI officers in Belfast earlier this week. A 27-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man remain in custody in relation to the incident, which forced the officers to dive for cover when two pipe bombs were thrown at them as they answered a 999 call in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

#ABORTION: The latest Millward Brown poll for the Sunday Independent has revealed an increase in the number of people stating abortion is unacceptable, regardless of the scenario. The poll showed the number of people who support abortion in cases of rape has dropped from 71 per cent to 68 per cent.

#HARRY: A man is being held in custody after admitting threatening to kill Britain’s Prince Harry. Ashraf Islam, 30, was charged on Saturday with threatening to murder the prince, contrary to Section 16 of the 1861 Offences against the Person Act. The British police’s Counter Terrorism Command investigated the case but no terror charges were brought.

#QUINTUPLETS: 23-year-old Czech woman Alexandra Kinova gave birth to quintuplets yesterday, becoming the proud mother of four boys and a girl. Kinova who is from Milovice, a town located northeast of Prague, already had a son. She defied odds of around one in 60 million by becoming pregnant with five babies without the use of IVF treatment. • When one 18-year-old US highschool student posted a photo of her classmates who had won ‘cutest couple’ in her senior class, she was shocked to see it shared almost 100.000 times. The caption read: “Two of my best friends won Cutest Couple of our senior class. First time in my school history a same sex couple has even been able to run for this category, not to mention winning it. So proud of them, and my school.”
• How’s your bank holiday working out? We hope you’re fulfilling some of those things you promise you’ll do every time summer (finally) rolls around…

THINGS WE SHARED:

• In a surprisingly frank interview with the Guardian, actor Michael Douglas has revealed that his throat cancer “was caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus.” The actor, 68, was diagnosed with stage four cancer – which is often terminal – in August 2010 but has been clear of cancer for the past two years.
• The American work ethic is often trumpeted as the reason the nation became a superpower – but is it all it’s cracked up to be?
