Trump revokes Secret Service protection for former vice president Kamala Harris

Former vice presidents typically get federal government protection for six months after leaving office.

US PRESIDENT DONALD Trump has revoked Secret Service protection for former vice president Kamala Harris, according to a senior White House official.

The move is the latest taken by the White House against Trump’s political enemies.

Former vice presidents typically get federal government protection for six months after leaving office, while ex-presidents do so for life.

But another person familiar with the matter said that former president Joe Biden quietly signed a directive that had extended protection for Harris beyond the traditional six months.

The sources insisted on anonymity to discuss a matter not made public.

A senior Harris aide told AFP that Harris was “grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”

Trump defeated Harris in the presidential election last year after Biden dropped out of the contest and Harris replaced him.

Harris is a former California attorney general and San Francisco district attorney.

She recently announced she will not run for governor next year.

While she has kept a low profile since losing the election, Harris is scheduled to go on tour this fall to promote a book she has written on her failed presidential bid. This travel will mean she has to appear often in public.

Harris’s inside look at her short presidential run against Trump is titled “107 Days.”

The memoir, published by Simon & Schuster, will be released on September 23 in the United States.

Harris said she wrote the book with “candor and reflection” and promised a “behind-the-scenes account” of the campaign.

Since taking office in January, Trump has taken a number of measures against his perceived enemies and political opponents.

He has stripped other officials and former officials of their security clearances, targeted law firms involved in past cases against him and pulled federal funding from universities.

Last week, FBI agents raided the home and office of former national security advisor John Bolton, one of Trump’s fiercest critics, in an investigation officials said was linked to classified documents.

In an attempt to shield them from retribution from Trump before he left office, Biden pre-emptively pardoned members of his family, as well as Dr Anthony Fauci, who led the country’s Covid response, and members of the panel that looked into the Capitol riot on 6 January 2021.

Biden also pardoned former general Mark Milley, whom Republicans accused of “treason” after it emerged he assured China in the last days of the first Trump presidency that the US would not launch a nuclear strike.
