THE FUNERAL OF one of the disappeared, Charlie Armstrong is to be held in Armagh today.

Armstrong’s body was released to his family on Thursday after he disappeared in 1981. His family believe he was abducted and murdered by the IRA.

The Armstrong family earlier paid tribute to a “caring man”. “Charlie was a caring and loving husband and a devoted father. He instilled in us all a respect for life, a respect for others and the importance of helping those less fortunate. We now need time to pay our respects and give him a rightful Christian burial in order that he may rest in peace.”

SINN FÉIN LEADER Gerry Adams has said there is no evidence that the IRA was involved in the death of Charlie Armstrong, one of ‘the disappeared‘. Armstrong went missing on his way to mass in Crosmaglen almost 30 years ago.

Authorities discovered a body near the border in Co Monaghan yesterday after receiving information regarding Armstrong’s disappearance. The remains are being examined to determine their identity.

Armstrong’s widow has spoken of her relief now that her husband’s remains appear to have been found. Kathleen Armstrong thanked the people who had been involved in the discovery.

The Independent Commission for the Location of Victims’ Remains is continuing to search for the remains of ten people believed to have been killed by paramilitaries during the Troubles.

Six bodies from the organisation’s original list have been recovered to date, and the organisation said that searches are continuing in Monaghan, Meath and Louth.
