The 9 at 9 Planning limbo, Iran talks, and fuel support subsidy scheme details to be signed off on.

LAST UPDATE | 28 Apr

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to know as you start your day.

Planning limbo

1. Planning for thousands of fast-track homes remains log-jammed with An Coimisiún Pleanála despite efforts by the authority to clear the backlog in recent years.

Figures obtained by The Journal under the Freedom of Information Act show that 11 separate applications to build 3,557 units are still to be considered more than a year after a decision from the commission was due.

Transport

2. From next week, a free travel scheme will be put in place for survivors of domestic violence and their dependents.

Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary will update his Cabinet colleagues on the initiative this morning, which will see travel supports offered through community welfare services such as women’s refuges.

Iran war

3. The White House said it is examining Iran’s latest proposal to unblock the Strait of Hormuz, two months after a US and Israeli offensive sent shockwaves through the global economy.

Fuel protests

4. Cabinet is set to sign off on the details of the Fuel Support Subsidy Scheme today for farmers, farm contractors and fisheries.

Construction contractors and quarry truck drivers will also be covered by the new scheme, which is expected to be finalised in the coming days.

Washington shooting

5. Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel said his widow joke about first lady Melania Trump was not “a call to assassination” after US President Donald Trump said he should be “immediately fired” over the remarks.

Kimmel did a sketch about the dinner where he joked that Melania had a “glow like an expectant widow”.

Financial scams

6. New research from the Central Bank of Ireland suggests that one in three Irish adults have experienced fraud or scams, with nearly two-thirds of victims suffering financial losses.

Waterford

7. A woman in her 40s died, and a man was arrested following an assault in Co Waterford yesterday evening.

Gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident at a residence in Grange Heights, Waterford city, at around 6.15pm.

Censorship

8. A chapter of censorship in Ireland is drawing to a close, as the government is preparing to repeal legislation that banned a celebrated book about a couple in the Cork Gaeltacht, along with works by other major Irish and international writers.

Just days before artists, musicians and theatre people gathered on the shores of the lake at Gougane Barra at the weekend to mark the occasion of ‘The Tailor and Ansty’.

9. Fire

Gardaí and emergency services are currently dealing with a fire at a pub on Eden Quay in Dublin city centre.
