A 16-YEAR-OLD boy who died after being stabbed at a school in Aberdeen has been named locally as Bailey Gwynne.

Earlier today police in Aberdeen, Scotland confirmed that he had died and that the investigation was being treated as a murder inquiry.

A second 16-year-old boy, believed to be a fellow pupil of the victim, has been taken into custody by police.

The incident happened at the secondary school Cults Academy at about 1.30pm this afternoon.

The boy was taken to the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary following the incident and his next of kin informed, but he has sadly since passed away.

It’s being reported that the academy will now close for at least the next two days as the investigation continues.

Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon has expressed her condolences to the boy’s family and to all those affected:

“This is a shocking and extraordinary incident for Aberdeen and firstly our thoughts are with the family and friends of the boy who has sadly lost his life today,” said Chief Inspector Graeme Mackie of the Aberdeen Police.

A full and thorough enquiry is underway and there will be a police presence in the area for the foreseeable future.
We are working closely with the education authorities and wider community as I am sure this incident will be felt not only in Aberdeen but much further afield.

Cults Academy is a comprehensive school serving Lower Deeside in the Scottish city north-east of Edinburgh.

The school currently has 1,050 pupils in attendance. It was founded in 1967.
