THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION IS holding its first full meeting today with a gathering in Malahide to discuss lowering the voting age and shortening the presidential term of office.

The 100-member body, chaired by Concern chief executive Tom Arnold, includes 66 members of the general public, who have been selected in order to provide a representative sample of the demographics of the Irish population.

It also includes 29 members of the Oireachtas and four members of the Northern Ireland assembly.

Delegates gathered at the Grand Hotel in north Dublin will hear presentations from the National Youth Council of Ireland and the Irish Association of Social Care Workers on lowering the voting age to 17.

DCU professor Robert Elgie will later address the group, and take a question and answer session, on the proposition to reduce the Presidential term from seven to five years.
