Two men arrested following car chase after shots fired in Cork city

TWO MEN IN their 20s have been arrested in Cork city following a car chase earlier this afternoon.

A number of shots were fired at Noonan Road in the city at about 2pm.

Gardaí responded to reports of the shots, and subsequently attempted to detain a car in the Ballyphehane area.

A car chase ensued with the suspect vehicle going out of control and crashing at the Boreenmanna Road in the east of the city.

The area is close to the GAA ground Páirc uí Rinn and was busy at the time with pedestrian traffic as two club hurling fixtures were due to take place at the stadium this afternoon.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that “a firearm was discharged” at Noonan Road earlier today.

“After a suspect car was stopped at the Boreenmanna Road, two men in their 20s were arrested,” they said.

The two men are being held under Section 30 of the Criminal Justice Act at the Bridewell Garda Station.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses who were in the vicinity of Noonan Road at the time the shots were fired to contact them.
