IF WE DO have another election, the government is going to be ready.
In the last few hours a tender has been issued on the website of the Office for Government Procurement, asking for the supply of polling cards for a ‘general election/ bye election’ (sic).
In total, the successful applicant would have to supply four million polling cards.
However, nobody should jump to any conclusions.
Speaking to TheJournal.ie a spokesperson for the Department of the Environment explained that this was “normal procedure” and does not indicate a possible election.
“What it is at the minute you have to go through certain procedures. Just in case it does happen,” they said.
The decision to put out a tender for the cards was made within the Department of the Environment and did not have any ministerial input.
The Department’s spokesperson also confirmed that it is the first time that it has had to make preparations for a possible election re-run.
The Office of Government Procurement was set up in 2013 with the role of streamlining the public procurement process across government departments.
