HILLARY CLINTON HAS described losing the presidential election as “painful”, and said the defeat was made worse because of the calibre of the candidate she lost to.
In an interview with Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy in New York, the Democratic nominee spoke about her concerns about President Donald Trump, interference in the election she lost, and about the Clintons’ links to Ireland.
In a teaser clip released ahead of Friday’s Late Late, Clinton told Tubridy that she “would have been really unhappy if I had lost to a normal Republican”.
“But to lose to someone who I believed profoundly was not ready for the job, was temperamentally unqualified for the job, was such a burden.
I just thought ‘I’ve just let everybody down, I’ve let my country down, I’ve let the world down. How did this happen?’
Former secretary of state Clinton is on a publicity tour to promote the release of her memoirs on the 2016 US election entitled What Happened, which includes exasperated lines like ”Breath out. Scream later”.
In the memoirs, she speaks of her own responsibility for her election loss, and her reaction to the news that she had been defeated by the controversial and amateur politician, Donald Trump.
She explored the night of the election campaign again in an in-depth interview with Tubridy, who described her as warm and funny.
He said:
“She gave a very engaging interview about everything that happened, from standing outside the inauguration of Donald Trump feeling quite sick and wanting to scream into a pillow; right back to the election night and the horror of what was happening for her, as well as reflecting on the campaign.”
The interview with Hillary Clinton will air on The Late Late Show this Friday, 29 September at 9.35pm.
