A TOTAL OF 53 countries and territories have now been issued with tsunami warnings following a 8.9 magnitude earthquake shaking the ocean beside Japan earlier today.
The earthquake, the seventh largest ever recorded on the globe, has created a tsunami bound for the islands in the Asia Pacific all the way to the west coast of the American continent.
The confirmed death toll has already reached 59, but authorities warn this will continue to mount as rescue teams work in affected areas – and as the waves hit other countries.
Twitter users in countries affected by the disaster have uploaded photographs and posted updates.
