GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you five things we think you should know before you head out the door…

1. #BAILOUT Ireland is to shortly draw down €463 million worth of loans from the British government, the finance minister Michael Noonan has said. The loans are in parallel with the EU/IMF support and are the first of a £7bn loan arrangement with the British.

2. #RACE FOR THE ÁRAS An independent senator has asked supporters to stop calling her office asking her to nominate Senator David Norris for the presidency. Jillian van Turnhout said she had made her decision and would be sticking by it despite some contact which she described as “abusive”.

3. #COURTS A garda sergeant has appeared in court charged with three counts of sexual assault on two female colleagues at a station in Dublin last year. He has been remanded to appear in court again next month.

4. #PALESTINE Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is due to present his country’s bid for statehood at the UN today amid much international scrutiny and the threat of a US veto. We’ve been looking at how that bid will affect the situation of Palestinian refugees.

5. #TREES ON THE QUAYS The building slated to be the headquarters of the now defunct Anglo Irish Bank could become a ‘vertical park’ under a radical proposal that would turn the concrete shell into a “national asset” according to the architect behind it.
