Hit-and-runs

1. Hit-and-run incidents made up almost 10% of all serious or fatal collisions on Irish roads in the last two months, according to new statistics. 

Figures compiled by The Journal show there were 16 hit-and-run incidents on Irish roads from 1 November 2024 to 6 January 2025.

Los Angeles fire deaths

2. The death toll from massive wildfires that have ravaged Los Angeles rose to 24 on Sunday, with officials warning of incoming dangerous winds that could whip the blazes up further.

Pedestrian killed

3. A man in his 70s has died after being hit by a car in Co Limerick.

Childcare crisis

4. Nearly nine in ten businesses in Dublin say the childcare crisis has damaged staffing levels.

Airport arrest

5. Gardaí arrested a man in his 60s following a seizure of drugs at Dublin Airport today.

Russia makes advances

6. Russia today claimed the capture of two villages in eastern Ukraine where its forces have been steadily advancing for months.

7. A number of popular Irish meteorology accounts have sprung up on social media in recent years, perhaps proving that Irish people really do love to talk about the weather. 

Although most of the accounts appear to be run by amateur weather enthusiasts, some have amassed hundreds of thousands of followers.

South Korea 

8. South Korean authorities has said they will change the concrete barriers used for navigation at airports around the country after the Jeju Air crash that left 179 people dead.

Murder investigation

9. A woman attacked and killed in her home in Cavan has been named locally as Annie Heyneman, as gardaí launch a murder investigation.
