1. #WATERFORD: A post-mortem examination is due this morning on the body of a man found at a derelict building in Waterford city yesterday. The man, in his 20s, was discovered at around 6pm yesterday evening.
2. #MAURITIUS: The trial has begun this morning of two hotel workers accused of murdering Tyrone woman Michaela McAreavey on her honeymoon in Mauritius last year. Room attendant Avinash Treebhoowon has withdrawn a previous confession, claiming it had been extracted following police abuse, while floor supervisor Sandip Moneea also denies the charges.
3. #COURTS: A 44-year-old man is to appear in court this morning charged in relation to the death of a 37-year-old woman who died at the weekend. The woman was discovered with serious injuries at a residence on Upper Sherrard Street on Saturday and brought to the Mater hospital where she subsequently died.
4. #REFERENDUM: Idiots! Lunatics! That’s what the ever-chirpy Michael O’Leary thinks of opponents to the Fiscal Compact treaty, according to an interview given to CNBC yesterday. Yesterday’s main campaigning centred on the Frontline referendum debate – which you can read about, as-it-happened, over here.
Staying with the referendum, this morning’s Read Me sees UCC’s Dr Jane Suiter analyse both sides to identify the winners and losers in the campaign to date.
5. #BANK CHARGES: If you’re one of the AIB customers planning on moving to another bank before current account charges are reintroduced next week, be wary: the Irish Independent reports today that Ulster Bank, the last of the three main banks which doesn’t charge regular fees, is planning to bring them back too.
6. #DSK: The former chief executive Dominique Strauss-Kahn faces new allegations today, after he was connected to an alleged gang rape in a hotel in Washington. The incident is said to have occurred in December 2010 in a hotel close to the White House. Strauss-Kahn is currently counter-suing the maid from a Manhattan hotel who accused him of sexual assualt a year ago this week.
7. #ALBANIA: At least 11 students have been killed after the bus in which they were travelling fell into a ravine 80 metres below. The cause of the crash is unclear, though witnesses say the bus had been travelling relatively quickly.
8. #DRACHMAIL: As Greece teeters on the brink of a potential exit from the eurozone, we’ve been looking at five suggestions submitted from some of the world’s most creative economists, examining exactly how the world could manage the collapse of the single currency. Warning: explainer will involve analogies about egg yolks, ‘big bangs’, and pledges of absolute secrecy.
9. #ED-ZERBAI-JOHN: It’s crunch time for Jedward tonight as the twins complete in the first live semi-final of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. We’re lucky they’re so energetic: Azerbaijan is four hours ahead of Ireland, meaning their performance of ‘Waterline’ – which is the last of the 18 entries tonight – won’t come until almost 2am local time.
