Toyota recall part 2: Car maker recalls over 35,000 cars in Ireland

A voluntary recall has been issued after problems were identified in the car maker’s Avensis and Prius models. It is part of a global recall of millions of vehicles.

TOYOTA HAS RECALLED thousands of cars in Ireland, the second such recall in just over a month, after problems were identified in two of the company’s cars.

A voluntary recall of some Avensis and Prius models has been issued due to water pump or steering problems in some models and is part of a global recall of millions of the same car models.

In Ireland, some 32,650 Avensis along with 1,859 Prius vehicles that were made between August 2002 and September 2008 are being recalled.

“This is purely a precautionary measure,” the company said in a statement saying that repairs will take around an hour to carry out.

The issue centres on a potential problem of wear in the splines on the intermediate steering shaft over a prolonged period of time. Toyota says that it will take around one hour to repair and at no cost to the customer.

There is also a voluntary recall of 749 Prius models manufactured between September 2003 and March 2009 to inspect a coil wire within the Hybrid water pump which circulates coolant through the hybrid system.

This repair will take around an hour-and-a-half to repair, again at no cost to the customer.

“Toyota Ireland will be writing directly to owners requesting them to bring their car to their Toyota dealer for inspection,” the company said in a statement.

The recall is part of a global recall of 2.77 million vehicle for the same problems, the latest blow to the firm’s reputation coming just over a month after it issued a global recall of 7.43 million vehicles over possible fire risk.

This included 36,000 cars in Ireland.
