EUROPEAN UNION LAWMAKERS have voted in favour of a ban on using labels traditionally linked to meat products on vegetarian alternatives.
If approved, the law would prevent food products from being marketed with terms such as “sausage” or “steak” unless they contain meat. The proposal will need to be negotiated with the EU’s 27 member states before it can become law.
A similar proposal for the ban was rejected in 2020.
Independent Ireland MEP Ciarán Mullooly welcomed the move, arguing that labels like “veggie burger” are “misleading” and cause confusion among consumers.
However, others have dismissed the proposal as unnecessary, with German MEP Peter Liese calling it “nonsensical”.
So, we want to turn the question to you: Should plant-based foods be able to use labels like ‘burger’ and ‘steak’?
