Gardaí upgrade Waterford assault case to murder investigation following postmortem

A 27-year-old man died after suffering a number of head injuries.

GARDAÍ INVESTIGATING THE assault of a 27-year-old man in Waterford city earlier this month have upgraded the case to a murder investigation.

The man was assaulted at the junction of John Street and The Manor at approximately 3am on Saturday 7 July.

He sustained a number of head injuries as a result of the attack. He was rushed by Ambulance to University Hospital in Waterford and subsequently transferred to Cork University Hospital where he died nearly a week later.

A 25-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident on Sunday 8 July but he has since been released without charge.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the assault or anyone who has any information to come forward.

Drivers who have dashcams who may have been in and around the scene at the time of the incident are also being asked to contact the Gardaí at Waterford 051-305300, the Garda Confidential Line 1-800-666-111 or any Garda Station.
