A STATUS YELLOW weather warning remains in place for four counties until 2pm today.

Met Éireann is predicting that Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo will be hit by thundery showers, a reduction of their earlier list of eight counties.

After a “once-in-a-century storm” in Donegal last month, €15.3 million worth of damage was done to the area and around 60 families have been registered as displaced. The local authority and residents in Donegal will be hoping the weather will stay relatively calm to give them a chance to repair damage done by floods and strong winds.

Today’s forecast for the rest of the country shows that although there will be the occasional sunny spell, many of the showers today will be heavy and sometimes prolonged.

The heavy rain with come in “thundery bursts” at times, and it will be “rather autumnal” today, says Met Éireann, with highs of 12 to 15 degrees in fresh and gusty northwesterly winds.

As for tonight, those showers will become heavier again – with between 25 to 40mm of rain falling in parts, with western counties worst affected.

There will be clear spells too over Munster and Leinster; lowest temperatures will be between 6 to 9 degrees Celsius.
