1. #SEANAD Senators have today voted to hold a referendum to ask the Irish electorate if it would like to abolish the House in which they sit. It was the final debate and vote on the proposed legislation to hold a referendum on getting rid of the second chamber, which could turn Ireland’s parliamentary system (the Oireachtas) into a unicameral legislature (with just the Dáil).

2. #MENTAL HEALTH Under the current Mental Health Act, voluntary patients are not entitled to have their detention reviewed by a mental health tribunal. TheJournal.ie interviews Minister Kathleen Lynch as part of a three-part series on the state of Ireland’s mental health.

3. #STABBING An investigation is underway after a 31-year-old man died and another man was stabbed during an incident a a house in Clare last night. The stabbing is believed to have occurred following a row at the house at Sandfield Mews in Ennis at around 1am.

4. #WAITING LISTS Hospital waiting list numbers for in-patients or day cases have increased and continue to increase according to The National Treatment Purchase Fund. Figures show that 49,290 are now on waiting lists, which is up on 41,732 in September 2012.

5. #PALE BLUE DOT This is what earth looks like from Saturn, 1.44 billion km away. A photo from NASA’s Cassini spacecraft showing the earth as a blue dot alongside the moon is only the third time ever the earth has been pictured from the outer solar system.
