CNN NEWS ANCHOR Anderson Cooper has apologised for saying that a Donald Trump supporter would defend the president “if he took a dump on his desk”.

Cooper was speaking to CNN contributor Jeffrey Lord when he spoke what he later himself described as a “crude sentence”.

Lord is a frequent guest on CNN political panels and was a vocal supporter of Donald Trump during his presidential campaign.

Last night he was speaking to Cooper about the revelation that Trump had shared classified information to Russia when the pair had the following exchange:

Cooper: You can’t defend what the President of the United States just said.Lord: I don’t care what he says to the Russians.

Cooper: Okay.

Lord: He’s the President of the United States, if he wants to say that, if Barack Obama wants to say whatever. If George Bush said I looked in his eyes…

Cooper (interjecting): If he took a dump on his desk, you’d defend it.

Lord (laughing): What?

Cooper: I mean I don’t know what he would do that you would not defend.

The exchange drew shock from watching viewers before Cooper apologised both on air and in a tweet after the show.

“I regret the crude sentence I spoke earlier tonight and followed it up by apologising on air. It was unprofessional. I am genuinely sorry,” Cooper said.

Lord seemingly accepted the apology, himself tweeting:

(Anderson Cooper) is my colleague and a friend for whom I have the highest professional and personal regard. Message America? It’s ok 2 laugh!

CNN has been a regular target of Trump’s anger in the past with the following tweet, sent three weeks after his election, a typical example.
