WHEN EWAN HANNY made his communion, he only had one thing in mind that he wanted to spend the money on.
The 10-year-old from Annacurragh in Wicklow had planned for years to get himself an animal.
Following the big day, Ewan followed through with this wish and spent the €900 he had collected on a cow. But not just any cow, Ewan decided he wanted a Belted Galloway heifer.
“I like horses, cows, sheep and dogs and cats,” Ewan told RTÉ Countrywide when reporters paid a visit.
First I was thinking about getting hens and then finally I got a Belted Galloway cow.
Ewan keeps the cow – named Abigail – at his uncle Tom’s farm outside nearby Aughrim in Wicklow. He spends a lot of time there with his uncle and his grandfather TJ.
“We’re the best of friends all our lives me and Ewan,” said TJ.
Ewan was diagnosed with autism when he was four years old. He lives with his mother Lindan father Richie and two siblings and attends the local national school.
Richie is originally from Scotland and works on oil rigs on the North Sea.
The Belted Galloway breed originated in Scotland and they are often used as dairy cows.
“All he’s ever wanted to be is a farmer like his grandad and his uncle,” said Linda.
For the last four years it’s been in his mind what’s he going to do with this money… and it was his uncle Tom put the idea of a Belted Galloway in his head.
Abigail is due to have a calf in September.
Ewan described his new animal to Countrywide.
“All black with white spelt going around it,” he said.
It’s quiet, tough and it can live up in the highlands all winter.
Ewan said his plan is to eventually have 30 cows.
I’m thinking of getting 30 cows. It’s a good way to spend my communion money!
