THE LAST POSTCARD sent home by Lorcán Miller was read out at his funeral today by his father, Ken Miller.
Hi guys, just wanted to send you a postcard to show you where I’m working this summer. Bubba Gumps is a restaurant based on the film Forest Gump.
You should watch it with Mum and Dad.All the food and drinks have really funny names based on the characters of the film.
Best of all, there are lots of prawns (though Americans call them shrimp). As part of my job I have to talk to customers and I always tell them about my amazing brothers and sisters and how much I miss them.
I hope you’re having lots of fun like me and being good. I’ll see you soon. Lots and lots and lots of love as always, Lorcán.
His father said the postcard arrived after the family had heard the sad news about his death and was signed off with twelve kisses.
Speaking about his son, he said he was an “extrovert who loved life and wasn’t afraid to try new things”.
“He was incredibly positive and threw everything into anything he did – from academics, to sport, to even learning the cocktails for his new job in Buba Gumps restaurant…”.
He also described him as a natural leader who loved life and his family.
The funeral of the medical student, who was studying in UCD, was held in Rathmichael Parish Church in Shankill County Dublin.
Members of Bray and UCD hockey teams formed a guard of honour as his remains arrived at the church. His friends from UCD and his school St Andrew’s College in Booterstown were in attendance, as was the Tánaiste Joan Burton.
Lorcán is the last of the victims to be laid to rest following tragic events last week when six students were killed when a balcony collapsed in Berkeley, California.
