The Daily Poll

Poll: Do BOD and Beyoncé represent the new celebrity icons in Irish society?

With people not looking up to politicians and attendances at church falling, are celebrities filling the void?

BRIAN O’DRISCOLL PLAYED his last game of rugby for his country on Irish soil yesterday.

A couple of hours later, less than 2km away from the Aviva Stadium, probably the biggest solo musician on the planet Beyoncé played one of her four sellout gigs at the O2.

Both cases saw outpourings of adoration from fans that is difficult to rival.

Compare this with the protests that greeted Europe’s political elite as they met in Dublin earlier this week.

So, with people not looking up to politicians and attendances at church falling, are celebrities filling the void?

Today’s question, Are celebrities the new icons in Irish society?

Poll Results:

Yes, people look up to celebrities too much. (1078)
No, celebrities are popular but not overly so. (1036)
No, traditional icons are still more relevant. (469)
Yes, but there's nothing wrong with aspiring to success. (142)
