POLICE IN BELFAST have discovered a substantial amount of high explosives at a block of flats in which hundreds of people live.

The PSNI say that the explosives were uncovered at Maeve House in the New Lodge area of the city as part of investigations into dissident republican terrorist activity.

The search operation took place in north Belfast last night and today.

A 47-year-old man from Co. Antrim has been arrested as a result of the search and is currently being questioned at Antrim police station.

“Police believe this to be a significant discovery,” according to chief superintendent Nigel Grimshaw.

It beggars belief that quantities of high explosives could be stored in a block of flats in which hundreds of people are living. I welcome the fact that colleagues from Serious Crime Branch have taken this material out of circulation. It has been removed for detailed examination but we believe it to be high explosives.

The PSNI say that the search is still ongoing and that officers are working to ensure that people are being kept safe during the search.

Specific details on the quantity or type of explosives have not been made available.
